What does Organic really mean?
There are far too many skin care brands using the term Organic on
products that most of us would not really consider to be Organic.
What does the dictionary say about Organic?
• Relating or belonging to the class of chemical compounds having a carbon basis; "hydrocarbons are organic compounds".
• Of or relating to or derived from living organisms.
So be careful: This means almost anything with carbon can be organic, like a diamond. Always ask, what is their definition of organic, what kind of organic is it, how much of it is organic and are their organic ingredients effective? And if the 1st ingredient on the list is water, then you are paying for mostly water.
Most Organic Skin Care Products Contain Less than
5% Organic Ingredients and Over 70% Water
• Some brands say they are 100% (Certified Organic) usually this means they are certified in another country but not by the U.S. Other brands claim they are 100% Organic when only 1% of the ingredients are organic because the 1% that is organic is 100% Organic…. Having a certified organic label relates to environmental issues such as not using herbicides or pesticides and that’s a good thing, however certified organic does NOT relate to effectiveness! • When a brand claims they have 50% organic ingredients they mean that 5 out of 10 of the ingredients are organic. Only those 5 organic ingredients may only account for 5%-10% of the entire organic content.
Other brands claim to be 50% organic because they use organic green tea in their water and since 50% of the product is organic green tea they claim that the product itself is 50% organic. This example is not a genuine 50% organic content claim, because organic green tea is 99.5% water and should not be listed as a genuine 100% organic ingredient. An important aim with claiming that products are Organic is to avoid the simple fact that they use water as the main ingredient; most products will never inform you of the percentage of Organic ingredients that they contain or how much of the product is just water. When water is the #1 ingredient then quality is not the #1 goal, profit is. The #1 ingredient in our products is always the most effective 100% Organic ingredients available, never water.
• Many brands create their own definitions for the term Organic and therefore claim to be Organic on that basis.
