How to read an ingredient label, properly.

What most people do is they look for bad ingredients, but they tend to ignore good ingredients. For example notice the ingredient list below it is all natural and it contain no chemicals at all. Do you think this is a good all natural product to buy?

• 15% Cocoa butter-Very comedogenic, clogs pores and should never be used on facial skin.


• 5% Aloe Vera-Active ingredient, healthy and very effective, but 5% Aloe will have no effect at all.


• 5% Fragrance-This can be anything, usually comedogenic oil.


• 2.5% Chamomile- Rejuvenating and relaxing, a good ingredient


• 2.5% Jojoba oil soothing, chemically close to the oil in human skin, a good ingredient.

Although this example is all natural, safe and contains no chemicals it also contains less than 10% active ingredients, meaning that 90% of this product does nothing for your skin. This example is meant to show that there is more to look for than just ingredients you don't want, you need to look for ingredients that are active or will have a positive effect on your skin.

Organic is good, right?
The goal in growing organic or certified organic ingredients is to avoid the use of toxic chemicals like herbicides or pesticides that damage the environment and that's a good thing. However organic does not relate to higher nutrient levels or more effective products, but hydroponically grown organic ingredients do all three. Highest controlled nutrient levels, most effective and consistent organic products while still being environmentally safe.

For a plant to receive a balanced diet, everything in the soil must be in perfect balance. Rarely, if ever, can you find such ideal conditions in soil due to the lack of organic matter left behind on the surface plus the contamination and biological imbalances. Botanical extracts are much more susceptible to quality variation than synthetic products. Concerning the use of preservatives:

Gunilla of Sweden® products contain well over 65% "raw and fresh" hydroponically grown 100% organic botanical ingredients. Quality fresh "non oil based" organic botanicals will start to mold and rot quickly, to have a reasonable shelf life and to stop microbial growth it is a necessity to use less than .05% FDA approved preservatives. Some organic skin care products avoid preservatives by using oils as the main ingredients, however oil can be comedogenic, they can clog the pores. Other organic products avoid preservatives by simple minimizing the organic content or not using fresh organic botanicals at all.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) reviewed the safety of methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben in 1984 and concluded they were safe for use in cosmetic products at levels up to 25%. Typically parabens are used at levels ranging from 0.01 to 0.3%. On November 14, 2003, the CIR began the process to reopen the safety assessments of methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben in order to offer interested parties an opportunity to submit new data for consideration. In September 2005, the CIR decided to re-open the safety assessment for parabens to request exposure estimates and a risk assessment for cosmetic uses.

In December 2005, after considering the margins of safety for exposure to women and infants, the Panel determined that there was no need to change its original conclusion that parabens are safe as used in cosmetics. Further, parabens are used at very low levels in cosmetics. In a review of the estrogenic activity of parabens, (Golden et al., in Critical Reviews in Toxicology, 2005) the author concluded that based on maximum daily exposure estimates, it was implausible that parabens could increase the risk associates with exposure to estrogenic chemicals.

FDA believes that at the present time there is no reason for consumers to be concerned about the use of cosmetics containing parabens. However, the agency will continue to evaluate new data in this area. If FDA determines that a health hazard exists, the agency will advise the industry and the public, and will consider its legal options under the authority of the FD&C Act in protecting the health and welfare of consumers.
