The Real Trouble of Most Acne Products TodayThe Real Trouble with Most Acne Products Today:The Sad Fact About Acne ProductsIt is a sad fact that Benzoyl peroxide and Salicylic acid are the active ingredient in over 95% of all acne treatments. Benzoyl peroxide is proven to generates free radicals damaging cellular DNA causing premature aging and thinning of skin. After decades of testing on animals Benzoyl peroxide was proven to promote papilloma and carcinoma formations as well as melanotic tumors within the dermis "skin" of animals. The FDA has downgraded the safety rating of Benzoyl peroxide with Action (56 FR 37622) Addiction to Benzoyl Peroxide and the EffectsOne of the main problems with Benzoyl peroxide is that once you start using the drug, it can be hard to stop, like many other drugs there can be serious side effects. Regardless of your skin and your acne you should only use Benzoyl peroxide for a very short period of time. Because if there is a lapse in treatment, bacteria and acne are likely to increase, significantly. Benzoyl peroxide will kill bacteria and may remove some acne, but when you stop using it your acne is likely to come back much worse than it was before and this is the cycle, the benzoyl peroxide cycle. Benzoyl peroxide has also been known to cause dry, itchy skin, redness, flaking, and burning. The dependency factor may be the reason 90% of acne products still use benzoyl peroxide, notice when you see these acne advertisements in magazines or on T.V. they avoid mentioning benzoyl peroxide, but look a bit closer, it's there. Regardless of celebrity endorsements almost every acne product on the market including Proactive® is still using benzoyl peroxide invented 80 years ago as the active ingredient against acne. Both have significant side effects and neither is necessary for the removal of acne. Most acne sufferers have no idea that benzoyl peroxide is NOT recognized by the FDA as a safe or very effective anti-acne drug. Many products are even claiming to be revolutionary when the active ingredient is benzoyl peroxide.
However BP is not revolutionary since BP was developed by Jack Breitbart of Revlon in the 1920s. In a 1977 study using a human maximization test, 76% of subjects acquired a
contact sensitization to benzoyl peroxide. Pure benzoyl peroxide is highly flammable, explosive and toxic. Skin Damage-Premature Aging and Thinning of SkinBenzoyl peroxide generates free radicals in the skin. Its effect is similar to unprotected sun exposure. The redness of the skin caused by sun exposure and Benzoyl Peroxide, are both the result of free radicals upon the skin. What this all amounts to is damage to the structure of your skin, and premature aging of the skin. The extent of the damage your skin incurs is related to how much, how often, and for how long you use products containing Benzoyl Peroxide. Often Gunilla of Sweden® customers with acne who have used benzoyl peroxide for over 2 years complain of persistent increased acne symptoms for several months after being weaned of the drug benzoyl peroxide. Example: Why many skin care professionals will no longer use Benzoyl peroxideMy sister and I are both estheticians and business owners and we have each have been doing professional skincare for 9yrs.
We chose Gunilla of Sweden® for our clients because we wanted a result oriented product for acne without using benzoyl peroxide.
The reason for no benzoyl peroxide is that clients who had used it were now experiencing hyper-pigmentation and thinning skin so, we really felt
strong about weaning them off. When switching them over to LEROSETT® we and our clients have found great success in their battle against
acne even the troublesome Adult cystic acne, which for us has helped build a strong trust between us and our clients. Longer Healing PeriodBecause this ingredient generates free radicals it interferes with and slows the healing process. The red and brown marks that are a part of the acne healing process may last much longer when Benzoyl Peroxide is used. As we now know, repeated exposure to the sun can and does cause skin cancer. It is now currently believed that repeated use of benzoyl peroxide as an acne treatment may have similar effects. Cancer, FDA Warnings, Tumors and Free RadicalsBenzyol Peroxide has been linked to cancer for a number of years and many research journal entries state "benzoyl peroxide is a free radical-generating skin tumor promoting agent." Performing a word search of the words "benzoyl peroxide cancer" in PubMed in the National Library of Medicine produces 102 articles from medical publications dealing with research aspects of Benzoyl Peroxide and cancer. About two-thirds of the research supports linkage between Benzoyl Peroxide and skin cancer.
"In 1995 the FDA changed benzoyl peroxide from a Category I (safe) to a Category III (safety is uncertain) ingredient and stated this action (56 FR 37622) was based on new information that raised a safety concern regarding benzoyl peroxide as a tumor promoter in mice..." Additionally, the FDA charged manufacturers with the responsibility of providing this information to consumers so they could make educated decisions. Many manufacturers and product marketers have not provided this information to skin care professionals so that consumers can be advised of the potential dangers. A more complete FDA statement is below. Use of benzoyl peroxide to control acne may involve side effects and risks that should be considered in making decisions on acne treatment. Carcinogenesis. 1987 Mar;8(3):479-82. PubMed FDA Laws and Regulation, 1995 Benzoyl PeroxideFood and Drug Administration (FDA) / Department of Health and Human Services "Topical Drug Products Containing Benzoyl Peroxide: Required Labeling" "The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is proposing additional labeling (warning and directions) for all topically-applied acne treatment drug products containing benzoyl peroxide. The warning advises consumers to avoid unnecessary sun exposure and to use a sunscreen when using a benzoyl peroxide product to treat acne..." "The agency classified benzoyl peroxide from its previous status Category I to Category III status. This action (56 FR 37622) was based on new information that raised a safety concern regarding benzoyl peroxide as a tumor promoter in mice and a study that reported that benzoyl peroxide has tumor initiation potential." "FDA evaluated data and information and determined that the studies show that benzoyl peroxide is a skin tumor promoter in more than one strain of mice as well as in hamsters. Although animal data and human epidemiology data are a available, the agency has determined that further studies are necessary to adequately assess the tumorigenic potential of benzoyl peroxide. These studies are currently being conducted. The agency acknowledges that it may take several years for these studies to be completed and analyzed, and for the final determination to be made on benzoyl peroxide's safety." To date studies (which have shown only tumor promotion) have been of short duration (about 52 weeks). Who gets acne? Anyone can get acne, and it can appear at many different times in your life: as a teenager or as an adult in your 20’s, 30’s and even your 40’s. The truth is that acne is caused by multiple factors related to the delicate balance between your hormones, your lifestyle and your skin. Every day, your skin produces oil and sheds dead skin cells, when this natural balance is off the result can be acne. For many acne sufferers increased oil production may be a result of hormones, or an inherited predisposition toward blemishes. Acne isn’t caused by what you’re eating or doing but by a combination of factors that allow acne to happen. Effective acne treatment involves prevention, exfoliation to keep pores clear, absorption of excess oil and minimizing irritation swelling and redness. All this can be done without the use of chemicals and it appears that chemical treatments are much less effective that the organic methods used by Gunilla of Sweden® products. By combining the techniques of climate controlled hydroponics with our proprietary nutrient extraction methods along with the application of heat treated minerals and natural clays Gunilla of Sweden® is the leader in effective High-Content Organic™ skin care.
